Circle of life

Last Thursday we had a cow lay down to die. We found her and we've tried to feed and water her to see if we could actually get her up, but the end result is that she will have to be put down. It's weird to have a somewhat emotional attachment to an investment. You don't want the cow to be in misery, but you also don't want to lose the money that you planned on getting from her. We actually had talked for a few weeks about getting her and 4 others that are old out of the herd and taking them to the sale barn and we hadn't done it yet. Because we put it off we have lost that investment and this cow has had a prolonged death. In all honesty both are sad things to me.

On a happier note, the circle of life continues. Last Thursday was the birth day of this little one. My dad found this one, so there is not fun name for it. I am thinking about calling it buster because she is so little and when she runs around the herd she looks like a dog! My folks have had a couple dogs the same color as this calf that were named Buster! :) It's not original, but it's fun!

This calf was born about a month ago or so. He's a fun little guy. Here he's hangin' out with pappa, other wise known as "The Bull." This one I found and I have grown to call him cocoa because he's the color of milk chocolate! :)

That is kind of sad. I don't think I ever would have made a good farmer.

Sorry to hear that your cow has to be put down. The calves look cute.

I know that I wouldn't be a good farmer.

Buster is a good name for a cow, but doesn't naming the cow make it harder to sell when the time comes? :)

To answer your question shakedust, nah. It really doesn't make it more difficult to sell them because as much as I enjoy them they are still an investment and at the end of the day I enjoy that more. There will always be another cute one coming up to take the place of one you sell. So the enjoyment continues on. :)

I have to put animals down everyday, in the name of science, of course, but you really get desensitized to some extent. I don't know about farm animals though, they are considered higher animals than rodents.
