Bells and Drums

N joined band. She will be playing the bells and snare drum this year. She was also interested in the flute. Since she first came to us about the bells and drums and we felt that musically she would benefit more from learning how to play them then the flute, we headed to the music store to do what every other parent in the area was doing. Renting her instrument! She has a big rolling bag that holds her drum, bells, stands, books, sticks and mallets in it. The thing is pretty big! We've all had fun pounding away this weekend. I think she's going to really like this.

She is also doing a country report on Peru in school. She is very excited to be learning more about Peru. She has a heart for missions and recently has informed me that she thinks she might be interested in teaching music and English to students in other countries. I guess 6th grade band is as good as place as any to decide if that might actually end up a possibility.

Ironically enough (I have not told her this.) If she did end up doing that I think she'd end up doing EXACTLY what my sister T in Indiana wanted to do. She had a heart for missions and wanted to pursue music and my parents "parented" her into a career that made more sense. I think she does really well as a med lab technician and I believe that she uses it as her own personal mission field when possible! :) But it's interesting to hear my daughter showing an interest in something that my sister had an interest in too.

Cman has shown an interest in teaching, that would be cool if they both became teachers! Since dash's family has a whole host of teachers in it, I would not be surprised! I guess time will tell. For now N is trying to conquer quarter notes and cman is trying to work on reading comprehension, so I guess they still have a few years to make a FINAL decision!

I wanted to do drums when I was N's age. Kudos to the parents not afraid to have loud, banging instruments in the house. I still have a desire to learn...not sure that'll ever happen. Can you take up drums in retirement? ha!

Yeah, I told her only the sick asthmatic kids got to do drums this young in our band! :) --She was like, thanks mom. LOL Actually that helped me decide drums/bells were better then flute. Although other then having to hold a long note I don't think the flute would affect her asthma like the trumpet. YIKES!

Teaching and percussions. It sounds like Dash might hold some sway in that family.

How fun that she's learning the drums! I bet her Dad is proud! Good luck with all that noise.
