I know our parents said it. I never thought I'd say it. But the curriculm today is not like it was when I was in 1st grade. Here's some prime examples. We were not really doing math that much, it was more of learning our numbers and writing them. Cman is working on greater then and less then. He's also adding single digits with 3 numbers ie. 5 + 4 +3 = It's not just in math.
In reading they have sight words they have to memorize Plus they are taught to sound words out. He's not getting this as well as they want him too, and I still think he's doing better then N did at this age. --I might be wrong?-- It seems like a lot, but we're working with him anyway.
His homework last night was on following directions. Make a bean trail from the rabit to the carrot. They have a compass and had to move 5 beans south, 4 beans east, 5 beans north, 11 beans east...etc. Cman's response when he headed north after just going south..."why are we going up? That's not the direction to the carrot?! But I told him he was suppose to follow the directions, this was the path they were taking! (I am glad he's got logic on his own--since they skip that with this exercise!)
Finally some of his spelling words this week: smile, title, find, white.....What happened to cab, map, sat?!
Oh well. I guess he can do it because he took his kids menu last night and turned it over and wrote words...including some spelling words and some I just threw out there and spelled them correctly!

That math and spelling sounds harder than what I did in first grade. Wow!
Oh yeah...and let's not forget grammar and punctuation that we learned in school! Seems like a whole generation missed this class...especially if you read any "personals" ads...lol! I'm sorry but if you really are looking for a "cute, sweet, femail", then I AM NOT the girl for you! LOL!
At least our school is teaching proofreading marks...YAY!
