SAR

Son's of American Revolution. They had a contest at N's school for the 5th graders. They 5th graders drew a picture of Valley Forge. N talked about her picture a lot. She didn't really understand what she was drawing at first! I guess that's one way to learn!? They combined history class with art for a while so the art teacher could help out on the project. Monday, we weren't back in town yet, but the SAR came back and held an assembly. N got her "thanks for participating" certificate along with her medal! She was in the top 10. 8th actually! 8th out of about 45 5th graders! She was very excited. She said that they might be taking the pictures to compete on a higher level, but she wasn't sure about that. This is the second time she's been recognized for her art work at school. Last year she made the art fair at Shawnee Mission Mall. I can't wait to see her picture of Valley Forge.

Tonight, she is going to sing to me. She had her choir's Christmas program. I didn't get to go to her program. So, she's bringing her program to me and singing her songs for me in a private concert tonight! What a cool kid with a great big bundle of talent!

The concert was neat. I'm usually the guy wondering aloud, "how many grades does this school have?!?!".

In this case however it was just the kids that had chosen to join band/orchestra/choir, so there were only a few performances. Each of the musical groups played about 3 short pieces. The longest was an actual "page turner" played by the advanced band.

I got a kick out of the fact that both the band director and the orchestra conductor did the same old joke about playing a wonderful Motzart piece that we might recognize ... Twinkle twinkle.

They both acted as if we would be riveted to our seats until we learned what the secret Motzart compostion was; when it turned out to be the same super slow melody we had just heard ... this time a screech screech - screech schreech instead of a honk honk - honk honk... there were audible sighs from the parents.

N's group was the best .. and not just because they had prerecored tracks to sing with. There were more than a few teary eyes in the house when they sang "Grown Up Christmas List".

Two of them were mine.

Just learned of your break. Hope it heals without too many problems. Great to hear about the family circling the wagons around you!
