This song in Fiddler on the roof stuck out to me. I know most people like the "Tradition" or "If I were a rich man", but to me "Do you love me" is the one that stood out the most to me.
Fiddler on the Roof lyricsMusical "Fiddler on the Roof" Do You Love Me? lyrics
(Tevye)"Golde, I have decided to give Perchik permission to become engaged to our daughter, Hodel."
(Golde)"What??? He's poor! He has nothing, absolutely nothing!"
(Tevye)"He's a good man, Golde. I like him. And what's more important, Hodel likes him. Hodel loves him. So what can we do? It's a new world... A new world. Love. Golde..."Do you love me?
(Golde)Do I what?
(Tevye)Do you love me?
(Golde)Do I love you? With our daughters getting married And this trouble in the town You're upset, you're worn out Go inside, go lie down! Maybe it's indigestion
(Tevye)"Golde I'm asking you a question..."Do you love me?
(Golde)You're a fool
(Tevye)"I know..."But do you love me?
(Golde)Do I love you? For twenty-five years I've washed your clothes Cooked your meals, cleaned your house Given you children, milked the cow After twenty-five years, why talk about love right now?
(Tevye)Golde, The first time I met you Was on our wedding day I was scared
(Golde)I was shy
(Tevye)I was nervous
(Golde)So was I
(Tevye)But my father and my mother Said we'd learn to love each other And now I'm asking, Golde Do you love me?
(Golde)I'm your wife
(Tevye)"I know..."But do you love me?
(Golde)Do I love him? For twenty-five years I've lived with himFought him, starved with him Twenty-five years my bed is his If that's not love, what is?
(Tevye)Then you love me?
(Golde)I suppose I do
(Tevye)And I suppose I love you too
(Both)It doesn't change a thingBut even so After twenty-five years It's nice to know
When I first saw Fiddler I was in college, dash's roomate was in the play and we went to go see it. I was in love, and so I remember thinking about what it would be like to be married for as long as the parents were without saying I love you.
I can't imagine cleaning and cooking for a man, doing all the things that she mentions and sharing all of lifes experiences with him-- without loving him! I believe with every day my love for dash and respect grow deeper and deeper. Each experience reveals another level of our growth together, how can you not love a person you share all of your life with?

The oldies song keeps running in my head--Do you love me? (Do you love me?) now that I can dance.
I saw Fiddler on the Roof a long time ago. What kind of an answer is "I suppose I do" for the do you love me question? How sad.
Well, since they had an arranged marriage love was not really something that they had to consider. It wasn't until their daughter falls in love and traditions started being challenged that they contemplate "do you love me?"
I guess I found the I supose I do as sweet in a practical kind of way. Here she's done all these things for and with him...and as she says..."If that's not love, what is?" I think we get caught up in the emotional feelings of love sometimes and underestimate the stick-to-itness of Love. (In my opinion! :) )
So, she must have been an "Acts of Service" person.
an even better question is why would someone spen there lives with someone they didn't love.
after 12.15 years .... it's nice to know......
