So, we're in Michigan now. as I write this Chad and Chan are out buying grill cleaner and doing "man" stuff. Chan is almost 14. He's a great kid - with some rough edges (smoother than most boys his age, in my opinion). He's into basketball, video games, and sports on tv. I don't really share any of these interests. So how does a mom that's 40 connect with her 14 year old son? Well, I think I've found my connecting point for us in Michigan!
We're sharing an "office". We still want his pc in a public space. He said he was ok with having his pc in my office and after redoing some ideas - today we completed the "office space". It's our den, off the living room. With him having this shared space with me, we'll be able to work "together". As he does homework, or plays Minecraft. Today, he sat down and started to make a list! I didn't realize he was a list maker -like me. ;) His desk is awesomely decorated and we predict that this room ends up being where most of the "family talks" takes place, as we added a comfy chair for Chad. ;)
It may not be a basketball court, but it's a connection and I'm very happy to be sharing it with him!

Fourteen is a difficult age to be. It's cool that you figured out this way to connect. A family room/office/computer room sounds like a great idea.
