61 years

I spoke with a woman today for over an hour about her husband. He died in December and when I called to check in with her to see how she was doing she started sharing. They had been married for 61 years. He was not a man who was saved his whole life. She said he came to know Christ as an older adult. He was a musician and taught one man who is now in Nashville and has played for Porter Wagner years ago. She a couple years ago he went deaf and until then he played music at clubs and "hooten nanny's" in the area every week!

I bring him up because of the love and admiration in her voice when talking about him. She read a letter that a local pastor wrote about him. He put it on the cover of his bulletin and he shared the saying "Don't let the music die within you." He referred to her husband and how much he shared his love of music with so many others. He referred to his gifted abilities and how we all have gifts that make us unique, if it's not in music it's in another area. This man who died had several instruments, but one guitar that people knew him by. He always played "yeller" and when one of his former students was visiting him in his final days she and her husband let him know that once he died 'yeller' would go to him. He passed on his knowledge and love for music and even went to the extent that he gave his most precious earthly possesion to a student of his (not his family) so it would continue to be used. She said that this student shared how when he'd play christian music for Hube he'd say to this young man "that's the right kind to play!" This man made a difference in a lot of peoples lives over the years, his music was an avenue that God used.

I was inspired by what she shared. It makes me want to be better at being me. I want to be a better mom, a better wife, a better secretary, a better teacher, a better friend. I want to be a better me.

Another saying I heard this week "what we do, does effect others. Good or bad, it will have an impact." It's my goal to be on the good side and I'm going to do my best to not let the music die in me!

You can learn a lot when you least expect it by listening. I think everybody has got some wisdom to share.
