God's Blessings

I, like Dust can say that I have many things in my life to be thankful for and am on a regular basis. I am even willing to admit that a lot of the blessings I have encountered (I believe) are from God. Even knowing this about myself I was still bothered by a conversation I had with someone the other day.

They worked Overtime and were complaining that the check they got was so small in comparison because of taxes. When I pointed out that they would get that money later (on their return) they said "I'll get that money because I GIVE to God and I'm blessed."

That statement really angered me. Why can't people be mature enough to understand that YES some blessings that can't be explained come from God. But when the meth user and you that are working together get the SAME pay get the same tax return at the end of the year that's because of tax laws, not because some miracle from God. Does God really want credit for that? Why would he? What's the blessing? It's something that happens to everyone and there is nothing special about it.

The other thing that bothered me is how some people throw around the "I'll be blessed. I GIVE to God" as if other people don't? This person was sitting in a house full of people who give to God. They aren't the only ones blessed but you would not believe it from their statment.

I don't know, it just really frustrated me the other day when I encountered this attitude. Why is it that some people just have to feel that they are better and more blessed than others that they give God credit for things that he has nothing to do with? It doesn't make God look bigger it makes them look smaller and immature as a Christian and an adult.

(In my opinion.)

This is just like my mother praying for a close parking space at the grocery store, but driving around 15 times first!

I completely agree.

Actually, the statement kind of sounds like the person thinks they are earning the blessing by giving. I don't know this for sure, since I don't know if there were non-verbal cues and I don't know anything about that person.

I try to be careful not to discuss any giving that I do because of what Jesus said in Matthew 6:2. It's about giving to the needy, but the principle applies to all giving.

"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full."

It is hard to be around someone with that kind of attitude. It is even harder to bite your tongue!

My stepmom prays for the most ridiculous things too. When they were here, she wanted to go to BODY WORLDS 3, but I warned her that tickets are often sold out. She rebuked my comment (seriously!!) and prayed right there that God would see that she got body worlds tickets. (BB was beside himself when she did that!!)
That irritates me, when people pray for stupid things like that. And here is a woman who has been a spirit-filled christian for 30 years.

Agreed!

I try to stay away from those statements. What is a blessing from God and what is happenstance?

I would hate to think that I am not being blessed because I didn't get a prime parking spot or my kid gets sick or I lose my job.
