I got a call today around 10am. "T-whatcha doing?" I did as I usually do and answered my mom with what I was doing. This time it was sitting down to work on my H&R Block homework. She mentioned that the cows that my dad has bought were out the night before and she wondered if I wanted to ride with her to go check on them. I said "SURE!" (I love cows/farm stuff even more then numbers!)
We pulled in and there were 11 from the herd out. There's roughly 50 head of cattle on the ranch right now. Dash and I helped load 12 out of the 16 my dad has at his place to sell on Saturday. The cows that were out were in a corn field and mom and I had to herd them back up to the back field where they needed to be. They are searching for their calves that are no longer there.
I mentioned to mom that before we left we needed to go check the back fence line to the corn field. She didn't think that was really where they were getting out, but agreed. Off we went to check the line. Dash and I had just done this on my dad's property on Saturday so I had an idea of what I was in for. What I didn't expect was so much of the fence row to be damaged. Dad said part of it had been busted by a bush-hog. The wire was snapped broke and so were some poles. There mom and I were with no tools (duh) and a bunch of cows just waiting for us to leave so they could wander off again.
The short story is that mom and I babysat the cows for the next few hours until my dad could get there from work with the tools we needed to repair the fence. We sat up on the hill by the fence line and drove/herded them off when they headed for the holes in the fence. I had a great day, despite the circumstances being less then great. Mom and I laughed and she shared a Walmart story that a blog would not do justice, just know that on my way home when I was rethinking the day it made me laugh out loud --again! :)
Around 10pm I pulled into the house to come in and watch about an hour of tv before I got into my homework. It took me about 2 hours to complete. It's a lot of reading and then do some workbook pages.
It's now 1:30 and I'll be going to bed soon, I think I'll sleep okay. I'm a little bummed that my H&R Block classes were moved to 3 days a week--10am to 1pm. I would LOVE to sleep in tomorrow! :) Oh well, such is the life that I asked for when moving back to help out on the farm! :) I wouldn't have it any other way!

T the rancher! What a fun way to spend time with your mom.
It sounds like you made lemons into lemonade (which itself sounds like a bad management self-help book).
Isn't it hard to get motivation to do homework as an adult? It's a good thing you like numbers. :)
I hate homework. Glad it's you guys getting smarter. I could never have done it at that time of night. YOu must be a night owl.
sounds fun. life is better at it's unexpected moments.
what is it about wal-mart? everybody has a crazy wal-mart story.
I enjoyed helping to load and sort the calves. I also learned that the cows that T mentioned were gettting were taking on the fences that they had accepted for a long time because they were trying to find their calves that had been taken away.
