We went to the Sixth grade breakfast at Sante Fe Trail today. Afterwards we went to the gym for the certificate ceremony. This year they decided not to announce what the kids got and recognize the grades together. I was bummed because Cman really wanted us to see him get his award. They recognize their involvement in things through the year and behavior as well.
They have a separate award, that's well--basically the outstanding life-time achievement for the top sixth grade boy and girl. N has worked really hard since coming to this school, hoping and praying to get the award (I won't keep you waiting...she did not get it.) She was bummed, but had practiced being happy for whoever got it so, she handled her disappointment well.
As a parent, I felt that she may not get the award because we are not super involved in the school. But N has maintained her A/B honor roll since fourth grade, STUCO rep two times, band, a lead in the 6th grade play, safety patrol and their captain 2 quarters, and many other things. I am glad that for her the award was motivation. She has learned a lot of good leadership skills through SFT. She has learned a lot of quality life skills through SFT and she has learned a lot about having fun through SFT. In addition to that, she's smart too! So I guess she's learned some academic things as well! :)
She may not have gotten a life-time achievement award from the school, but she has a achieved a lot in her young life time! As her mom I could not be more proud of her determination and dedication. She has worked harder for the things she wants in life then I ever did. I know that she will continue to be a strong and outstanding woman and I'm glad that she was in the right school to help her find and work on those skills at such a young age.
In a side note--they told a story of the 6th graders future, based on a paper they wrote on where they saw themselves in 20 years. N's story line has her as a rock star that lives part-time in Indiana and runs a charitable organization with 2 adopted kids and no husband! :) HA! She told me she was too young to picture a spouse and that she just decided it was better to not have one then to make something up! I know she likes singing...but ROCK STAR! I hope she doesn't expect me at those concerts! :) I'll have to wear ear plugs for sure! LOL

She has made a lot of achievements for her age. I'd go to one of her concerts
It sounds like you have a lot to be proud of in your daughter. She's quite a young lady.
What I found out when I got home is that once they got to their room they gave out more awards. N got a medal and a trophy for being the top score in her class on their math test and in the top 20% for Shawnee Mission School district. She was also recognized by her teacher for having the highest AR score and having been involved in more things then any other kid in her class. Like I said, she works hard for what she gets and blows my mind all the time!
They should have given N the medal and trophy in front of everybody so you could see it. Great job, N! The rock star thing is funny! I bet she could be a star if she really wanted to!
I agree that they should have given N her awards when everyone was there. Especially if she was so outstanding in the grades and activities, that should result in greater recognition.
I'd go to her concert as well.
