Social Butterfly

Some people are social butterflies. They seem to blossom when meeting new people. They are never at a loss for conversation. They take train rides to meet people???

Recently when discussing a trip my mom and sister were taking together they mentioned Amtrak. I told them I would check on prices for them. When I mentioned the prices my mother thought they seemed high. I explained. The trip from Chicago to NY is 18 hours. So I priced it where they would have their own private room. Without missing a beat I was told that they did not want privacy. That you take train rides to meet people and that they would NOT want their own room.

That does not sound like my idea of fun. If I am taking a trip to be with my mom I am not taking it to go meet new people? People I will never see again? But this is her idea of a fun train trip. I told her that was fine. Then I told her when we take our trip it won't be by train! :) She said that was fine too! She wants both of us to be happy!

Where did I come from? I certainly did not get the social butterfly gene from my mom. Unless I'm in the caterpillar stage! :)

I thought about Amtrak for Christmas time, and if I did that I would definitely want my own room.

Having ridden trains all over Europe, just because you don't have your own room doesn't mean that you have to talk to people. But it is always fun, meeting other Americans/Canadians and comparing adventures and sharing information or talking to locals who want to practice their English. A room is nice too! Either way, good times.

But the people watching is great.

I am like you, I would want privacy in my own room. On almost every plane ride I have been on, no one has ever tried to start a conversation with me. Is it an unsaid rule that people want alone time on planes to read their book or be on their laptop?

I am a social butterfly, I am sure that will be a shock to all of my friends. However, I do like to just watch and read when I travel. It's a catch 22 - I feel like I'm supposed to meet and evangelize those I travel with but in reality I just want to lurk and read. It's the only undivided read time with no guilt that something else is not getting done.
