And as far as I can tell this is less then we bought last year! It's fun to go shopping for school supplies, but I have to admit the thought of scooting around walmart with 10 large boxes of Kleenex in my cart is disconcerting. I am also wondering how my kids will go through 72 #2 pencils this year. A friend of mine pointed out that there are 36 weeks in school(180 days divided by 5), so I am essentially buying them a pencil for every week. N is getting the 30 pens so that's almost 1 pen per week. This sounds a little extreme to me? And who's using all this paper? My kids certainly don't use it all. N informed me that the teachers have a check list and they pull you aside and ask you where your supplies are if you do not bring them in at the beginning of the year. She offered this information after I suggested leaving some of it at home and taking it in when they ask for more stuff 3/4 of the way through the year. Yes, they really do send home letters stating that they need more tissue, or more paper, or more pencils. Chandler said a girl in his class writes her name on every crayon and asked if we would do that and not just on the box! (I think the answer is no to that.) Can you imagine writing your name on 72 pencils, 24 crayons, etc? I will say that I do put their names on the boxes even when I'm told not too, I do this so they know that my child brought their supplies. My opinion is that if I am going to take the time and money I take to go get the stuff I want to make sure that my child's teacher knows we did our part! 10 boxes of Kleenex. They must live for August like candy cane retailers live for Christmas!

Wow, school supplies are much more complicated than they used to be. We kept all our in our desks. Do they collect them and give them out randomly when someone asks for something. This is public school - don't our tax dollars pay for printer paper?
I confess I love shopping for office supplies though - always have to talk myself out of stuff I don't really need.
I wholeheartedly agree!
I am afraid to go get the lists at Walmart...lol!
I hate that they "pool" all the supplies, then at the end of the year....divide up what is left...so you get someone else's name all over them. I don't think they really want us putting our names on them...but I do anyway...like you said...to show we did our part.
Besides the kids get humiliated if they don't have everything. This has happened every year to both my boys. EVEN WHEN the stores didn't have the items!!!!
What comes home, does go back! Crossed out and renamed!!! =)
Like Roaming, I also have a weakness for fresh supplies! Born into my blood....must be why I am an office manager for choice of career! LOL!
Wow, that does seem insane.
So, it's like a communist version of sharing the wealth. Instead of being responsible for your pens and pencils, you get to buy extras so every kid can loose one a week.
I spent about $80 today on school stuff and we still need the thermos and lunch sack. But everything else is organized with names on it and ready for the new year in the kids rooms! They were determined to get everything ready tonight! It went rather quickly with their help!
Just write "Comrade" on each crayon, pencil, etc. That will drive the point across better than writing "C-Man" on it. :)
