There's a difference between being a fan and enjoying something

Dash is pretty hung up on the fact that I have watched some Star Trek shows. He's amazed that I know about some of the characters and where they are from or what part of the ship they work in. I am not so much of a fan that I remembered many names without him saying them first. I did remember a lot about their jobs. I remembered the cook, the ensign, the engineer, the doctor, the counselor etc.

I enjoyed the show when I watched it, but dash was so much of a fan and he wanted to talk about every aspect of the show and how the shows interconnect. That was also during a time when Deep Space Nine, Generation, and Voyager were all on at the same time. I am not a fan of DS9, I didn't watch many episodes and 3 shows at the same time was overload for me.

I personally liked Picard better then Janeway, but I liked the overall show Voyager better then Generations. B'Ellana is probably my favorite star trek character. I liked her intelligence as an Engineer. I liked what she worked to overcome as being part of the ship that wasn't on the "favored" side in the beginning to being very trusted in the end. Being 1/2 Klingon wasn't easy either. I also liked that they showed her intellect but they also made her real with her love interests.

There are a lot of things that I can enjoy, but few things I call myself a fan of. I guess that's the biggest difference between dash and myself, if he likes something he's a BIG fan of it, where as I can enjoy something but I rarely talk about it. Typically when I do someone else has brought it up first. Sometimes I down play how much I like something because I feel like dash likes it more then enough for the both of us!

The only new one I really ever got into was The Next Generation. DS9 is more a soap opera than a Sci-Fi. I went through a kick where I watched TNG every night for a while, but the formula the show follows eventually got to me (something threatens the crew, someone advocates a violent workaround, a passive workaround is found that saves the day).

I used to think I cared about the details of my favorite fiction. Then I met Dash. :)

I'm a fan of Babylon5. Good story arc that stretches over the five-year season. Great character development. Do you remember the salt-vampire from the original series? Sucked the salt right out of everybody that came into contact with it and left weird puckery rashed all over the victim. Seems that salt was really important to it. I know the Star Trek cook would agree on the importance of salt as well.

I've watched Star Trek a little and a couple of the other versions. You couldn't call me a fan. I eventually faded away from watching them - you could see what was coming. I watched enough episodes of the sci-fi movies to laugh hysterically at Gallaxy Quest. Loved that movie.

Hmmm...salt you say?! Evil influencer and encourager! :) :) :) Have I thanked you properly for the salt book recommendation?!

Well, you have certainly surprised ME! And I have known you how long?? 13 years+....wow! You still know WAY more than I do...or ever care too...but I seem to always end up meeting a date that loves sci-fi...lol!

I just remember that Dash told me one of the requirements for my dating was to make sure they liked playing table games...so I figure if they have sci-fi in common...then you and I can still have our "girl's night out" to Country Kitchen late at night!!!

I know what you mean about enjoying vs. being a fan. I am a fan of many thing and I enjoy many more things. I have never watched any of the new Star Trek shows, but I know that I'd enjoy them if I had the time to watch.

So T, what are you a fan of. What is something you like to talk about?

Well forrest, the annoying thing that dash has grown to love and accept about me is I am not a fan of very many things.

Don't get me wrong, I can talk about things and there are things I like. But not many rank to "fan" level.

Also the things I like at the "fan" level are things that I could do again and again and again. They aren't things people talk about typically when speaking of being a fan of something. Here's what I could come up with after consideration of your question.

I am a fan of:
*Drive-In movies
*Camping with the kids
*Quiet Time
*Sitting on the deck at night just soaking up the evening air, right as the temperature has dropped just enough to make it more bearable.
*N and Cman

Don't ask me about favorites, like colors, actors, movies--it all depends on the mood I'm in! :) I could have made this it's own blog! oh well....

I don't like Star Trek or anything that resembles it. Those shows bore me to tears.

Maybe you are a jack-of-all- trades when it comes to tv shows. You seem to have watched a little bit of everything--enough to have a conversation with someone about it.

Except Alias and lost! :)

I also have a tendency to pick up on characters and shows quickly, so even if I have only seen clips of it here and there I can talk about. I learned that trait early on, my mom would miss the first parts of shows and need to be caught up--so I was the one who usually filled her in on what was happening!

... so you like camping with the kids?!?!?!? ... I guess I'm just there to cook and start fires?

oh - and just in case anyone forgot: ... the rains came down and the fire stayed lit ... the reains came down and the fire stayes lit ... the rains came down (not just a teeny little bit) and the fire stayed lit all night.
