When I was a young child (early elem) I was in my first and really only real car wreck. You know what I mean, two cars both traveling on a highway different directions colliding and thus coming to a complete unplanned stop.
It was a rainy Sunday evening. My mom loaded myself, my younger brother, and my two older sisters into the car, we were going to church! As the rain hit the windshield on the big white Buick (we called it a boat:) )and we sailed down the highway that we traveled everyday. There in the middle of the highway were ducks. The oncoming vehicle saw the ducks. The ducks kept sauntering, the vehicle was braking. The vehicle was on a slick road.
BAM! POW! CRACK!
Child one (little bro) was braced by mom's arm. Child 2 (me) hit the windshield before landing in the floor. Children 3 and 4 hit the seats in front of them and landed in the floor.
Coming to a stop, the woman from the car that just hit us jumps out of her car, seeing my mom and all of us crawl out of the car she rushed over to my mom and repeats several times....
DID YOU HIT THE DUCKS?! DID YOU HIT THE DUCKS?!
To this day my mom is still amazed how a woman could car more about passing birds on a highway then the fact that they hit a car with 5 people, 4 of which were under the age of 14.
I was reminded of this moment the other day traveling down Metcalf. The traffic was slowing down, but what for? An accident? A red light? A person on a bike? A person walking? NO. It was DUCKS. Blessed ducks crossing Metcalf!

My parents house sat for a family who had a farm once. The grandmother of the family pulled came by one day to talk and as she was pulling out one of her tires ran completely over a duck that was walking through the driveway. It bothered me a little because it didn't immediately kill the duck like I would have expected it to. The duck just sat implanted in that one spot legs sticking out opposite directions quacking as normal.
Well, in both instances, no ducks were hurt. Not that I think they should have been. But the woman who hit us swerved to miss the ducks! DUH!
Were there any injuries, or was it a bumps and bruises kind of thing?
One other thing... So, if your mom's car had hit one of the ducks so that it spun in the air and landed on the other lady would that technically be flipping the bird?
Yes, I suppose there potentially could have been a bird flipped! We all came out of it okay, I guess! Some people still wonder about me and all my head injuries! :)
That happens in my apartment complex and at my work parking lot.
Where do they come from? =)
I remember I blogged one time about pausing for the ducks to cross....and that I learned to stop and take a deep breath to be more patient.
Isn't it amazing the power of someone/something so small?
Dust and Golden will soon learn this as well!! ;)
forrest I think you read my mom's mind! :) :) :) :)
Afflack! Afflack!
