Can it be done? My 10 year old daughter is trying (again) to change her name. She has tried this a few times without it sticking. She currently goes by her first name, but her middle name is Nicole and she's trying to go by Nicky. I am okay with this. I obviously like her name, I gave it to her. There are more variations of her first name then of Nicky out there right now, which is another reason that I like it. But can this be done? Since we've agreed officially to this, this weekend (it took dad a while to agree.) We've been trying to call her Nicky at home. Even writing it down on the score sheets for Skipbo.
She has successfully gotten her Wed. night teachers to call her Nicky, all her paper work has been changed to "Nicky" F. ***I know I'm breaking rules by using her real name, but it's not like you don't already know it!***
Anyway, I don't know if it will stick, but we're trying to help her with the transition. It's going to take a while before I think of her as a Nicky, but I'm willing to try for her. My parents never let me do this. Of course "Lea" isn't that cool of a name to change too. I did try to go by Tonya Lea, but again, no one seems to find that fitting.
With all the name change talk happening Chandler has officially decided that he likes Chan for his name. He's even started signing some things Chan vs. Chandler! I don't know if I should encourage them or not, next thing you know my husband will insist on being called H!

My dad and I share the exact same name. I changed my name to a "nickname" my mom had been calling me in 5th grade when we moved. I didn't know there was paperwork involved - what do I need to do to become official. The tranistion was a little weird at first, around the people who know you as the other (like at church)and getting them to call you by your new name. But looking back all these years, I see no harm.
OMG! This is such the startling news...lol! If it weren't for blogging, I might have missed out on this transition! =D
Let's see...I tried to change my name too, when I was younger. Do you remember the 80's rage of "personalized" items, such as shoestrings and hair combs? Well, I hated the Ja part of my name because I could NEVER find it. So I wanted to go by the Dee part of my name. (ask T for translation)
However, my mother started a new trend of buying me EVERYTHING she found with my Ja name on it....and it usually comes in RED & GREEN! Thus, I have a wonderful collection of my name in celebratory colors. (I like it now)
It was my EVERY intention to start going by my middle name when I got to college...but I forgot...lol! And I realized that my first name kind of stood out in 1500 students...lol! But I REALLY enjoyed my first name when I learned that the other two J's on campus were going by THEIR middle name...leaving me to be the only TRUE J! =D
her stars paperwork forrest. I don't think you need to worry about that unless you are in the 3rd to 5th grade stars class at church!
My sister tried to convince me to use an alternate name for her when she was younger. I didn't like the alternate name, though, so I didn't use it.
I have never really cared to have an alternate name, but that could be because my legal name is formal and the name I go by is casual. Both formal and casual needs are met. Also, I like both names so there is no need to replace either of them.
Wow. I am kinda sad over the name change. I will try to start calling her Nicky. You are being a cool mom about this. She will look back at this someday and really appreciate you. She probably already does.
